Introduction

Dont be fooled by the suave picture on the cover - underneath this debonair exterior, Im just a humble bloke from the suburbs trying to earn a dollar and raise a family. Like most people, I've grappled with how to achieve that all-important balance in life: having enough money to be fi nancially secure (with a little left over to enjoy the finer things in life from time to time), while not working so hard that life passes you by and leaves you with a no-expenses-spared funeral. Thankfully, my education and upbringing taught me the secret to achieving this: work smarter, not harder.

My own financial journey began with my upbringing and early jobs. Thanks to my parents, I learned the importance of money and hard work from an early age, and was fortunate to have great role models and mentors in my formative years. This book is for those of you who weren't so lucky.

Giving advice to clients all day, every day, has shown me that everyone makes the same financial mistakes, regardless of whether you're a battler or a brain surgeon. Sure, there are plenty of financial self-help books out there, but they're either not being read or not getting the message across. So I thought I'd put my pen where my mouth is (not My Left Foot-style - its just a figure of speech) and write down my own philosophies in the hope it would help someone turn their fortunes around.

I'm passionate about helping people realise their potential. Some of my greatest business achievements have come from working with young people mired in debt, or small business owners who feel swamped and helpless. I genuinely get excited about seeing the transformation in people who go from 'I cant see a way out' to 'I can do this'.

The principles and techniques I discuss in this book have been gathered, developed and refined over many years. I've reached them
by observing my parents, colleagues and clients, building a successful small business, reading respected experts and through my own journey of self-discovery. I also believe that the best way to learn is to become a teacher, so thats what I did. Presenting workshops to CPAs was a daunting challenge, but it motivated me to learn as much as I could about the subject matter and become an expert in that fi eld in the process.

The examples, lessons and tips I provide are real, and they're easy to implement in your own life. No, you dont have to renounce everything, don a robe, move to a monastery and live on bread and water. I don't ask my clients to do anything I wouldn't do. You work hard, with many more years ahead of you - who doesnt want to have something to show for it? I genuinely believe everyone
can achieve financial prosperity. Just because you're not from a wealthy family doesn't mean you can't get on the money train. I'm
living proof.

This book covers a range of topics, from basic financial concepts and my own philosophies, to fairly full-on investment strategies. There's something for everyone whether you earn $35 000 or $350 000. I suggest that, even if you're reasonably financially astute, you use the early chapters as a refresher course on some basic financial concepts. It's important that we're both on the same page from the start, as I will regularly refer back to concepts covered in earlier chapters.

Like all great books, the best bit is the dramatic climax. In the final chapter I condense the key actions outlined throughout the book into my ten steps to financial freedom, aka your road map to prosperitytown.

This book will help you take a money load off your mind and give you the power to achieve financial independence.
